How do i know when a melon is ripe enough?

I bought 2 yellow oval melons. I dont know how to gauge if the they are ripe enough to eat, i cut one up and the melon is ok to eat but not as nice as it would have been if it had ripened just a little bit more, Should i cut the other melon now and let it ripen in the fridge or should i leave it for another few days to ripen in its own skin, many thanks
