If you like him and want a relationship with him it's probably best to show that you're interested in his personal life and show that you care by asking him what's wrong. Just bring it up nicely, and if you can tell ( or if he tells you) that he doesn't want you involved than drop it. At least you tried, and it's a sign that you care about him too.
