1996 pontiac with 6 cyl. starter replaced. When starting, starter stays on. when open hood it stops?

I had the starter changed and it was fine for a couple of weeks. One morning when starting the starter stayed on. Car did not start. When I opened hood it stopped. Worked fine the whole day. Next morning same thing. When I opened hood it stops. 60 degree weather .
