Do I NEED A LICENSE TO PLAY LIVE MUSIC?

I work at a small coffee shop in San Dimas. We have been getting bombarded by ASCAP demanding that we pay them an annual fee of $504. We offer live music on the weekends. I understand that we cannot play cover songs. But if the band is playing their own original songs, do i still need to pay the fee to ASCAP??
